A garage door's lift cables are what the springs pull on to raise the door, so when a cable frays, kinks or jumps off its drum the door either hangs crooked or will not lift at all. Each cable leaves the bottom bracket on a lower corner of the door and winds up onto a drum on the spring shaft. DASMA's terminology sheet describes that bracket as the piece that holds a track roller and may also anchor the lifting cable, and it carries spring tension while the door is closed, so it is released by a trained technician and never loosened by hand.
We inspect both cables on every visit, not only the one that failed. A cable that slipped often points to a worn drum groove, a seized roller or a bent track, and a cable that broke has usually been fraying at the bracket end for months. We replace the cable, usually both sides together because they share the same load and cycles, check the drums and brackets, re-square the door and test it under the opener.
